This year we are excited to partner with our friends at Voice of the People to present a Back to School Summer Bash on Saturday, July 26, from 12-4pm at Sunnyside Mall in Uptown. We’ll have food, summertime treats, music, games and activities for kids, giveaways, and backpacks with school supplies!
Everyone is welcome for this community event. Our neighborhoods are stronger and safer when we get to know each other, and when we build community with joy and love.
Please note: Sunnyside Mall is accessible from the Wilson Red Line, the #81, #78, #22 and #36 buses. There is limited street parking nearby. There are no public restrooms at Sunnyside Mall, please plan your trip accordingly. This is an outdoor public event in a shady pedestrian street, please dress appropriately for the weather. Food and all giveaway items will be first come, first served.
At the end of June, the CPS School Board voted unanimously to create a Healthy Green Schools pilot program, thanks to organizing from our Environmental Justice leaders, and students, parents, and teachers in our North Side schools. The initiative will build clean energy projects will be built in 12 schools by the end of the coming school year, prioritizing schools in Black and Brown neighborhoods. This will mean much-needed repairs to old buildings and crucial improvements to make our schools climate change resilient and more carbon neutral.
Major shoutout to our allies in the Green Schools campaign who have fought alongside us for years, and especially big kudos to our 5 student leaders who attended and gave strong testimony in the Board Meeting on June 26!

Winning is really just step one — now we have to plan for how these initiatives move forward to ensure they are equitable and successful.

Are you interested in restorative justice, police accountability, and innovative solutions to make our communities safer? Come get involved with us! If you’ve been thinking about getting involved with our Building Safe Communities Team but didn’t know how to start, this meeting will be a great starting point. We will use it to go over our campaigns and issue platform for newcomers.
