ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

Organizing Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside (ONE Northside) is a community organization resulting from the merger of Lakeview Action Coalition and Organization of the Northeast.  Together, LAC and ONE have a history of nearly 60 years of powerful and effective community organizing.  ONE Northside started on July 1, 2013.  ONE Northside organizes people from over 30 institutions as well as individual community residents from Rogers Park, Edgewater, Uptown, Ravenswood, North Center, Lake View, and Lincoln Park.

Organizing Neighborhoods for Equality: Northside is a mixed-income, multi-ethnic, intergenerational organization that unites our diverse communities. We build collective power to eliminate injustice through bold and innovative community organizing. We accomplish this through developing grassroots leaders and acting together to effect change.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Faith Community Organizer will work with the organizing team at ONE Northside to build power within North Side faith communities. This will include outreach to, relationship-building, and leadership development with current and prospective faith member institutions of ONE Northside, including churches, synagogues, mosques, etc, and building and strengthening relationships with clergy, faith leaders and lay leaders. This individual will help us organize with these institutions to help accomplish our power-building and  issue campaign goals.   

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Faith community basebuilding
    • Conducts one-on-one meetings with all clergy of ONE Northside Faith Member Institutions, keeping careful records of their congregation’s issues and needs re: ONS issues, and needs of the clergy group as a whole.
    • Grow ONE Northside’s faith congregation membership by identifying prospective faith member institutions and conducting one-on-one’s with their clergy to build new relationships to bring into ONE Northside
    • Train & cultivate the leadership of layleaders within faith organizations to actively represent their organization to ONE Northside and participate in organizational events and campaigns. 
    • Maintain clear records in our database and google sheets to track relationships with faith communities and their participation with ONE Northside. 
    • Work with ONS team to lead Presentation/Announcements at congregations to ensure active participation in ONE Northside issue campaigns. 
    • Develop faith-centered materials for congregations to connect their faith values to current ONE Northside organizing opportunities. Preach and share about ONE Northside’s campaigns in congregations when invited.
  • Organizes regular meetings of North Side clergy by
    • crafting the agenda with support from leading clergy
    • Turning out clergy and tracking attendance
    • Planning logistics for meeting
    • Follows-up to ensure commitments made at the meeting are completed
  • Dues/Fundraising
    • Lead the effort to hit organizational institutional membership goals for faith organizations by contacting clergy about their annual Membership Dues and tracking membership status in organization tracking system. 
    • Develop faith centered fundraising plan to deploy with ONE Northside’s faith leader base for year-round fundraising events. 

This contract starts on Monday, August 4th and will run indefinitely contingent on funding.

This position is a part time position for 20 hours a week. This is an in-person position, with some in-office work days expected, including weekly all-staff meetings, in-person and occasional in-person attendance of clergy meetings and weekend congregational services. Occasional weekend and evening participation in organization-wide events is also expected. The week to week schedule is flexible with a standard weekly schedule set at beginning of contract.

Access to transportation to meet faith leaders at their own locations throughout the North Side is required.  Fluency in Spanish, or another common language spoken on Chicago’s far North Side, is a plus.

Compensation for this position is $25/hour and will be conducted as an independent contractor. Payment will be on a semi-monthly schedule.
