Big wins in the IL budget! + More June News

ONE Northside’s State Budget Priorities Win in Springfield!

We have exciting victories to celebrate in the state budget that was passed at the end of May. It still needs to be signed by the governor, but we’re hopeful that we and our allies are poised to win:

  • Full & increased funding for our ONE Northside Violence Prevention team, which was slated to lose 60% of its budget!
  • Statewide Parent Mentors program fully funded at $20 million (an increase from last year, meaning even more classrooms will benefit from increased parent involvement), plus an additional $2.5 million for the Ladders of Opportunity program;
  • $355 million in new funding that comes from taxing big corporations that dodge paying their fair share.

These were the areas we worked the hardest on, and a huge thanks goes out to all of you who traveled to Springfield, emailed legislators, gathered or sent letters of support, and worked in so many ways behind-the-scenes for the past few months to achieve this outcome.

Unfortunately there were some losses, like the Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults Program, which provided insurance to adults who are not eligible for federally funded health care benefits because of their immigration status. As the federal government advances a budget with huge funding cuts to healthcare, housing, food assistance and other programs our members rely on, we are disappointed our IL legislature and the governor didn’t do more to tax big tech and billionaires to ensure those critical supports are still funded in our communities.

Budgets are never all good or all bad. But for now there is some good news for us to celebrate while we plan for what we can do to win more for our communities in the months and years to come. Thank you to our allies in the legislature who helped us secure these victories — Sens. Simmons, Feigenholtz, and Villivalam, and Reps. Huynh, Cassidy, Olickal.
