A message on Bring Chicago Home
Dear friends,
We did not get the results on Election Night that we were hoping and organizing for on the Bring Chicago Home ballot question. There are still over 100,000 mail ballots that haven’t been counted yet, so there is also still hope. But while we don’t have a decisive victory on our hands, and we begin to reflect and strategize about what comes next, we know one thing for sure — our fight for safe, affordable, accessible housing for all Chicagoans goes on.
We are so grateful and proud of all our volunteers and leaders! As you know, our Housing Justice and Economic Justice leaders and staff have been instrumental in the Bring Chicago Home coalition from its very beginning in 2018. In the last 12 weeks, we knocked on over 34,000 doors, we made thousands of calls and had thousands of conversations with our friends, families, and communities! We deepened relationships with other North Side organizations. Early results show that our North Side wards did vote “yes” and with some of the highest numbers in the city! Thank you all so much.
The fight for justice is long, and it is never linear. Let’s let ourselves sit in all the feelings of this moment: Anger and rage at how the wealthy, corporate real estate interests poured their money into defeating this effort to create funding to support and house the homeless. Pride at what we did in a short time without nearly as many resources as this campaign needed and deserved. Encouragement at the many ways hundreds of people took new risks and grew in new ways.
I have seen, in the 15 years I’ve been with this organization, that sometimes we lose before we win big. I call it “losing forward”. I am confident a victory will emerge from what we built through this campaign. Maybe the one we were fighting for, maybe something we can’t see right now.
But one thing is clear, we must keep growing our people power. I know that we can make a city, state and country possible where love and fairness prevail. Stay tuned in April for opportunities to come together and start planning what comes next.

Estimados amigos,
No obtuvimos anoche los resultados que esperábamos y por los que estábamos organizando en la pregunta de la boleta de Bring Chicago Home. Todavía hay más de 100,000 boletas por correo que no se han contado, así que todavía hay esperanza. Pero mientras no tenemos una victoria decisiva en nuestras manos, y comenzamos a reflexionar y planificar sobre lo que sigue, sabemos una cosa con certeza: nuestra lucha por una vivienda segura, asequible y accesible para todos los habitantes de Chicago continúa.
¡Estamos muy agradecidos y orgullosos de todos nuestros voluntarios y líderes! Como saben, nuestros líderes y personal de Justicia de Vivienda y Justicia Económica han sido fundamentales en la coalición Bring Chicago Home desde sus inicios en 2018. ¡En las últimas 12 semanas, tocamos más de 34,000 puertas, hicimos miles de llamadas y tuvimos miles de conversaciones con nuestros amigos, familias y comunidades! La lucha por la justicia es larga y nunca es lineal. Permítanos sentir todas las emociones de este momento: ira y rabia por cómo los intereses inmobiliarios corporativos y adinerados invirtieron su dinero en derrotar este esfuerzo para crear fondos para apoyar y albergar a las personas sin hogar. Orgullo por lo que hicimos en poco tiempo sin casi tantos recursos como esta campaña necesitaba y merecía. Ánimo por las muchas formas en que cientos de personas tomaron nuevos riesgos y crecieron de nuevas maneras.
He visto, en los 15 años que he estado con esta organización, que a veces perdemos antes de ganar a lo grande. Lo llamo “perder hacia adelante”. Estoy seguro de que una victoria surgirá de lo que construimos a través de esta campaña. Tal vez la que estábamos luchando por conseguir, tal vez algo que no podemos ver en este momento.
Pero una cosa está clara, debemos seguir aumentando nuestro poder popular. Sé que podemos hacer posible una ciudad, estado y país donde prevalezcan el amor y la equidad. Estén atentos en abril para oportunidades de reunirnos y comenzar a planificar lo que sigue.
